Today I had the opportunity to present to one of our local senior centers on a serious topic, “When the Phone Rings”.  Those family members who have experienced receiving the dreaded call about a loved one falling for example, know all to well how out of control they feel.

In many cases a fall can be a result of medications that are interfering with other medications causing dizziness.

We recently had a client who moved in with his daughter. She had taken him for an appointment with his doctor and during the appointment the doctor prescribed a new medication.  A couple of days later not feeling well, the man fell.  Within a week of  falling he passed away. Was this coincidence? Honestly we’ll never know but asking questions an make a difference.

Questions need to be asked about new medication being prescribed. For example how will this medication co-exist with other medications currently being consumed? How often and what time of day should I take the medications? Ask about side effects, this is especially important to understand all aspects of the medications being consumed by the individual.

We have a new resource that can help. The Home Instead Senior Care® network worked with Humana Points of Caregiving® to develop a Senior Emergency Kit that includes a place for information about your parents’ medications. The tool also features the pharmacist, one of the first lines of defense for family caregivers when it comes to questions about medications.
