The 40-70 Rule

by MichelleR on January 30, 2012

Home Instead Senior Care offers a variety of booklet-guides
to help with getting prepared for age, including The 40-70 Rule® guide to conversation starters between Boomers and their senior loved ones. The 40-70 Rule® is when you are 40 and your parents are 70. This age
marks the time to start talking about certain senior topics. With 1:3 adults in
the U.S having communication obstacles with their parents, it can be hard to
know where to start talking about sensitive topics. Home Instead Senior Care paired with Jake Harwood, Ph.D, has developed a guide to help bridge this communication.

The first step is to gather as much information as you can.
Observe your parents, talk with peers on what plans their families have in
place and explore options for the future. Don’t try to reach a conclusion. Remain open-minded.

Start to talk it out with your parents to see what they are already aware of and how they have prepared for the future. Sooner is better
when developing possible situations that could occur, such as poor eyesight and driving at night.

Try to remember that you are both adults. Stay away from being on the defensive. The best way is to put yourself in your parents’ shoes when addressing the situation.

Try to maximize independence by emphasizing how one can maintain
their strengths. At Home Instead Senior Care we provide assistance in a number of activities including meal preparation, light housekeeping and our Life Journal, which are examples of projects we do together as CAREgiver and Client.

Be aware of the whole situation. This means to be aware of
your parents’ social life and levels of stimulation.

The final step is to ask for help. Home Instead Senior Care
as well as local Aging Agencies can help provide multiple options of care and answer your questions.
