Phillips Lifeline has helped millions of seniors in their time of need with their Medical Alert services. In an effort to improve quality
of life, Lifeline is focusing on health and well-being and they have a campaign called “Stay Stroke Free”.  According to the flyer I received from Lifeline, “80% of stroke victims have no apparent warning signs or symptoms.”   Lifeline is using innovative technology to screen arteries for buildup of fatty plaque- the leading cause of a stroke.  The advanced ultrasound technology can actually see inside your arteries to help determine your risk of stroke.  When detected early, 4 out of 5 strokes can be prevented.  It is now possible for you and your doctor to do something before it is too late.

Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is stopped, causing brain cells to die. There are ways to reduce the risk of stroke: eat a healthy diet, stay active, don’t smoke, control high blood pressure, control high cholesterol, and control diabetes.

The screenings given by Lifeline do not detect all causes of a stroke, but they do screen for leading causes including, carotid
artery disease
and atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat). They also screen for common stroke risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood sugar, and elevated C-reactive protein.

Even if you have had a stroke, you can still get screened but you may want to check with your doctor first, as insurance may cover the cost of your diagnostic studies.

What happens if your test comes back abnormal?

An abnormal finding for this study means that a problem exists; which your physician needs to know about in order to conduct further diagnostic testing. You may need medication or lifestyle changes, as well as yearly follow-ups. If the disease is advanced enough, your physician may refer you to a vascular surgeon.

Visit for more information. They offer many more screenings.

Stay Healthy!
